“Democracy is liberty – a liberty which does not infringe on the liberty nor encroach on the rights of others; a liberty which maintains strict discipline, and makes law its guarantee and the basis of its exercise. This alone is true liberty; this alone can produce true democracy.”
Freedom is frequently assumed to be the absence of rules and responsibilities. IMO, however, discipline is the backbone of freedom. We could not move without our skeletal system. A country cannot move without its laws and infrastructure. A society cannot move without the framework of social etiquette and behavior that binds us together and separates us from insects and protozoans.
In summary: When your child is being a brat and disturbing other people in the train- kicking them, throwing their food and stepping on their toes- you cannot ignore it. Yes, he is 4 years old and does not understand social customs and etiquette. YOU ARE HIS PARENT. IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH HIM. Giving him freedom to cause a ruckus does not make you a good parent. Making him understand why he shouldn’t, will. Sheesh.
